RSE/ People Skills

Intent

The aim of the RSE/ People Skills curriculum is to teach the children at Elston All Saints Primary the skills they need to go out into the world with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live healthy, safe, productive and fulfilled lives, both now and in the future.  We want our children to have a ‘work hard’, ‘can do’ attitude which will allow them to flourish in the wider community.  We want our children to be able to communicate their thoughts and opinions clearly and in an appropriate manner. We understand that we children grow older they may be faced with many varied situations within their social groups so we will prepare them with the necessary, age-appropriate information to make sensible and informed decisions so that they are safe. In today’s world the use of the internet plays a key roles and we want our children to understand how to use it safely and with an understanding of the risks.

Implementation

Heartsmart

Children follow the church school’s version of Heartsmart from Foundation to Year 6. Heartsmart teaches children to build resilience, strengthen emotional intelligence and develop active empathy. Fundamentally Heartsmart is about loving and accepting ourselves as well as loving and responding to others.

Living in the wider world

In KS2 the children follow a curriculum which allows them to consider their role in the wider world. They look at financial education, safety both in the real world and online and diverse Britain.

In Year 5/6 the children also follow the DART programme where they develop an awareness of staying safe in situations linked to drugs, alcohol, knife crime and bullying.

All the children will also have access to a variety of outside providers to lead assemblies and workshops throughout the school including The Dogs Trust, police, fire brigade etc.

As part of their computing curriculum, all children will take part in lessons on online safety. These lessons are, however, not simple stand-alone lessons. These skills are an integral part of the whole curriculum and reference will be made to online safety on a regular basis.

CWP (changes, puberty and sex education lessons)

During the summer term the whole school take part in Family Week where the children focus on what it means to be a family and the different types of relationships there are. During this time all children begin work on their CWP lessons have a progressive approach to teaching children about the changes that will happen to them as they grow and become young adults.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

We work closely with the Mental Health Support Team (MHST) and have regular workshops for example sleep training, transition and body image. We take part in national days such as Children’s Mental Health Week and Hello Yellow Day to promote wellbeing and we use mindful breaks and yoga breathing to give the children opportunities to be mindful during the school day.

Impact

Teachers will monitor the children’s progress through conversations and marking of written work. They will identify any children who have not grasped a concept and will allow time for further discussion to ensure each child is safe, happy, confident and prepared with the skills they need to go out into the wider world.
