Science
Intent
At Elston All Saints Primary we want all children to develop a love for science and a fascination of the world around them. We endeavour to provide a high quality science education that provides children with the foundations they need to recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life. We want our children to appreciate how science has changed the lives of human beings and know that it is vital to the world’s future prosperity. We want our children to think with a scientific mind and to ask questions to further their knowledge and understanding. We want our children to be able to plan fair investigations in order to learn for themselves about the wonders of science.
Implementation
We follow the Grammarsaurus scheme of work which has a progressive approach to develop skills to match all the National Curriculum science topics. Children return to subjects such as light, forces and electricity and build on their previous knowledge. The children are provided with knowledge organisers so key information and facts are easily accessible.
Children are given many opportunities to develop their scientific investigative skills and staff use Think Talk Do Science and Explorify to support their planning. Children are taught how to plan fair tests, how to collect data by taking careful measurements and how to draw conclusions from their results.
Impact
Assessment
Teachers will regularly assess the children’s attainment in science by listening to class discussions and marking written work. They will closely observe when children are taking part in practical work and will ask questions to further develop the children’s knowledge and understanding.
At the end of each unit the children will carry out a short assessment in the form of a quiz which will allow teachers to monitor each’s children performance.
Our children will be confident, knowledgeable scientists who can talk about the world they live in and the science behind everyday occurrences. They will regularly ask question and will be confident to carry out their own investigation.
