Intent

We want to develop a love for number and a passion for problem solving for all children at All Saints Primary School. We want children to see the purpose of maths in everyday life and to see problems and challenges as something to tackle with enthusiasm without a fear of failing.

Our Aims

  • To guide and nurture each individual on their own personal journeys to becoming successful mathematicians.
  • To provide exciting opportunities and experiences that engage and enhance all pupils.
  •  To support children to have a secure grasp of number and number facts.
  • To develop children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics.
  • To engage all children in all areas of mathematics from taking accurate measurements to describing and classifying shapes.
  • To support children to solve a variety of maths problems and enquiries.
  • To plan a progressive curriculum to build upon previous teaching, with regular assessment to ensure each child’s needs are met to reach their full potential.

Implementation

At All Saints Primary, we follow the Maths No Problem approach and children take part in daily lessons at the level appropriate for their needs. Maths No Problem follows a mastery approach, which means we strive to give the best opportunities for all of our children from Foundation to Year 6. Through following the mastery approach, children develop their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills. Key areas are revisited regularly to ensure all members of the class have mastered key concepts.

As children progress through the Maths No Problem Scheme, they are exposed to conceptual ideas at a concrete level using a range of manipulatives (counters, beads, Numicon, Base 10, rekenrek etc) before moving onto pictorial representations (diagrams, sketches, bar models). Following this process develops children’s deep conceptual understanding and skills which supports the next move into abstract maths. The children will be encouraged to make independent choices about the types of resources they may need as well as the most appropriate strategy to solve a problem.

As part of every child’s mastery of maths journey, they are taught a wide range of strategies to tackle all maths problems. These include reasoning, problem solving and number sense. In order to do this, alongside Maths No Problem, we also use the Ready to Progress framework.

Journaling

We provide opportunities for children to journal about their maths understanding. Each child in key stage 2 has a maths journal where they are able to explain in detail their understanding of the concept being taught.  Their journaling may be descriptive, evaluative, creative, investigative or formative. Examples of journaling include creating a step by step guide to using a written method; writing a set of word problems to match the concept being taught or an explanation of how a question has been answered.

Impact

Assessment:

  • Each chapter in Maths No Problem is followed by a review page. The children will complete each review independently and the teacher will use their work to assess them against the objectives for that chapter.  These assessments will be recorded on the Scholar Pak simple assessment grid as an ongoing assessment for the child.
  • Children in KS2 will mark their own work at the end of each worksheet and will have the opportunity to make corrections in purple pen. The teacher will look at each worksheet and decide whether any child needs further support.
  • At the end of each term, the children will complete the PUMA test which will give a standardised score allowing us to track their progress.
  • Children identified as not making sufficient progress are discussed at staff meetings and provision is put in place to support these children.
  • The class teachers will look at the Rising Stars assessment grids for areas of weakness for the whole class or specific groups and will plan accordingly to address these needs.
  • Children in KS2 will also have regular times tables test to support their progression in learning all their times tables facts.

Children at All Saints Primary will be happy to ‘have a go’ and make a mistake which they can learn from. They will be fluent mathematicians who can a range of strategies, skills and resources to use independently to solve a range of mathematical problems.
