French

Intent

Here at Elston All Saints Primary School, we aim to introduce pupils in both Key Stages to French language as well as exploring aspects of French culture.  It is our hope to broaden pupils' minds as well as preparing them for language learning in secondary school and even beyond.

Implementation

French is taught through a topic-based curriculum in both Key Stages encompassing the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing).  Each topic serves as an introduction to what pupils will learn in secondary school and appeals to personal interests including describing self and family, free time and buying food and drink.  Through these topics, pupils are introduced to a wide range of vocabulary as well as basic grammatical concepts and sentence structures.  There is an emphasis on transferable language where vocabulary and grammar introduced in one topic can be used in different contexts thereby increasing familiarity and confidence.

Impact

As a result of learning French at Elston All Saints Primary School, it is our hope that pupils are in an ideal place to build on and continue to learn their language studies.  They should have a bank of memorable language and grammar at their disposal which should serve them well as they experience a greater depth of learning in seondary school.  It might even plant seeds to a career using modern foreign languages.
