In Years 1 and 2, pupils receive an introduction to French with emphasis on speaking and listening skills. Topics covered include numbers, colours, pets and personal greetings. Learning techniques such as games, songs and short memory activities are used to promote progress and enthusiasm for the language.
In Years 3 and 4, pupils build on previous knowledge of French. Topics such as numbers, colours, pets and personal greetings are revisited. New topics such as family, free time activities and holidays are also introduced. Pupils gain experience in speaking, listening, reading and written activities and are encouraged to work using models and word lists.
In Years 5 and 6, the curriculum is aimed at preparing pupils for studying French at secondary school. A wide range of topics are taught and pupils are introduced to giving opinions and reasons in order to increase their level of progress. In addition, they are given an introduction to grammar and learn phrases using past, present and future verb tenses. Although written work is often based on model sentences, pupils are encouraged to work independently and find new words using ICT.
